Bernardo Silva confirms his City exit after nine years

Bernardo Silva will leave Manchester City at the end of the season. After a week of speculation, both the club and the Portuguese midfielder confirmed the decision, closing a nine-year association that ran through almost every trophy the modern club has won.

His farewell message on Instagram was characteristically light-footed about a very heavy legacy. “Cityzens, when I arrived nine years ago, I was following a dream of a little boy, wanting to succeed in life, wanting to achieve great things. This city and this club gave me much more than that, much more than I ever hoped for.”

Then the list: “The Centurions, the domestic quadruple, the Treble, the Four In A Row and much more… It wasn't that bad.”

He thanked the club, Pep Guardiola and the supporters, and noted that the years in Manchester were also the years in which he married and started a family — a reminder that for a player who arrived at 22, City was not just a career but most of his adult life.

He signed from Monaco in 2017 for £43 million, a fee that looked steep at the time and now reads like one of the great bargains of the era. He goes having been captain, having been the squad's most reliable big-game presser, and having reinvented himself positionally more times than most players manage once.

There is no sensible way to replace that. City will sign midfielders; they will not sign another Bernardo.
